1971年デビュー。1973年に出世作「なみだ恋」を発売。その後、「愛の終着駅」「もう一度逢いたい」「舟唄」等、数々のヒット曲を出し、1980 年には「雨の慕情」で第22回日本レコード大賞・大賞を受賞する。
芸能生活40周年を迎えた2010年には、歌唱技術が認められ文化庁長官表彰を受賞。
2012年10月には、ジャズアルバム「夜のアルバム」（ユニバーサルミュージック）を発売し、邦人アルバム史上最大級となる世界７５ヶ国で配信される。翌年ニューヨークの老舗ジャズクラブ「Birdland」でライブを行い、そのライブ盤アルバム「夢の夜 八代亜紀ライブ・イン・ニューヨーク」を発売。2014年10月、新曲を発売。

After starting out singing jazz in nightclubs, Aki Yashiro made her debut as an enka singer in 1971 and achieved her breakthrough two years later with the single and album Namida Koi. Since then, she has had a long list of hits such as Ai no Shuchakueki, Mo Ichido Aitai, Funauta, etc. In 1980, she received a 22nd Japan Record Award for Ame no Bojo.
In 2010, in celebration of her 40th anniversary in show business, she received a commendation recognizing her singing technique from the head of the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
In October 2012, she released a jazz album Yoru no Album (Universal Music), which was distributed in 75 countries, making it one of the largest-scale distributions in Japanese album history. In 2013, she performed live at Birdland, the well-known jazz club in New York, and a recording of the concert was released as Yume no Yoru Yashiro Aki Live in New York. She is planning to release a new song in October 2014.
